Bujumbura, Dec. 22 (ICGLR) – The Conference Secretariat of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) on Wednesday welcomed the adoption unanimously by the UN Security Council of the resolution to renew the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the DRC (MONUSCO) and the resolution to lift notification requirements for arms shipments to the DRC.
At present, the security situation in eastern DRC remains dire, with armed groups occupying vast areas and seriously threatening the lives and property of the population. Under the current circumstances, the mandate renewal for the UN peacekeeping mission is conducive to regional peace and stability and consistent with the expectations of the DRC government.
The Conference Secretariat of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) also welcomed the resolution that lifts the notification requirements for the import of arms by the DRC government.
Last year , the Chairman of the ICGLR and President of Angola, HE Joao Manuel Gonçalvas Lourenço, has been calling for lifting or adjusting the sanctions measures against some ICGLR member States and the Heads of Security Service known as Regional Coordination Committee of the ICGLR in their last meeting in Khartoum asked to the UN Security Council to adjust and remove in a timely manner the arms embargo against ICGLR member States, such as Sudan, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic, so as to create conditions for those governments to enhance their security capabilities.
The Conference Secretariat is delighted to see that at the critical juncture when the DRC government is combating armed groups and trying to maintain national security, the Security Council responded positively to the demands of the DRC and adopted unanimously the resolution 2667.
